MICF 2015: Reviews #12 – by Lucy Watson

Claire Sullivan

Space Cadet

Claire Sullivan is definitely an original, and you can’t help but love her. In a comedic landscape of conventions and narrative structures, of set ups and punchlines, Sullivan erupts onto the stage like a whirlwind, and blasts away any preconceived notions of who or what comedy should be. She is charming, and unpretentious, and most of all effortlessly funny. She is like a big ball of energy, fired straight at the audience, involving the crowd in such a disarming way that they are unafraid to just go with it – to shout responses to her questions, or get up on stage when she tells them to. She manages to invoke the giddy spirit, innocence, and wonder of a child, while still handling her jokes with a surprising wit and wisdom. The fact that she can bring both youthful joy, and comedic intellect together is definitely to her advantage. Overall, Space Cadet is chaotic, fun, silly and surprising. It is a young performer playing on stage, and with her audience, and the lack of boundaries allows her a great freedom to mess around and have fun. To really grow into a comedic force, and connect with a wider audience, she may need to harness the madness, and impose more structure, stagecraft and solid material. The trick will be to do this without losing the sheer joyful abandon that makes her such a delight to watch.
